ENG.
“Baroque” is a French transliteration of the Portuguese phrase “pérola barroca”, which means “irregular pearl”. Natural pearls that deviate from the usual, regular forms, so they do not have an axis of rotation, are known as “baroque pearls”.

(Etymology of the word according to the Oxford English Dictionary)

These works are based on European paintings from the Baroque (Western philosophical and stylistic period), mostly executed in Italy and the Flanders, and which, for being a part of the didactical services of the Catholic Church, narrate passages from the Bible.

During this period, themes featuring women as central characters are effectively brought up, as they are considered to be heroines of moral and of the people they represented, even while committing condemnable acts.

Minding the formal aspects of Baroque painting, the themes mostly present in the Old Testament, and their focus on the feminine figure, the stage is set. Images and crafts fuse, scenes are recreated. The themes are worked, and complimentary meanings which existed in the texts but were untold, are added. These are all topics of concern related to our present way of life’s dilemmas.
